Prototype is out and running.... now what.

   So we have changed our school model and now we must adjust our prototype on the fly.  We have removed bells, changed our teaching styles and content and worked on mentoring students in seminar. So now what happens.  Well as with anything new, there are things that need tweaking.  The students and I have been converting the library into a more usable space for us.  Yes, they got some comfy chairs back and tables from former student projects.  We are still waiting on big furniture.  

  So now we are adding course the students are hoping to get at school.  Precalc 12 and writing 12 are added for next semester.  We are also starting some girls and boys groups for the younger grades and peer tutoring from the older students to the younger. The atmosphere of collaboration is there.  But....
How can we engage the ones that have not opted into courses to fill the schedule?  I have been trying to solve this issue on a one on one basis. Is it working?  Not for all.  So now we need to look at how to find the big thing for every student.  We don’t want to force our ideas on them.  We need to help them find their drive.  So now we are looking at clubs at our school.  So far we have ideas of social justice, Lego wars, magic club and alternative energy (electric drag racer or solar powered school).

Now we need to find the way to do this.  I hate saying no to student ideas. What can you do?  Let us know if you have a way to help a project at our school or some time to donate to us.

Most memorable teaching moment!!     So I was late to the party last night with my twitter PLN and I was reading through the discussions and a question hit me.... Q7: What is a memorable teaching event that has stuck with you from years of teaching? What did you learn from it? Why do we teach for my past and not our childrens future. That is my big question today.  Why am I still teaching the same courses I took as a child.  Has the world not changed... Have we not changed our job outlooks... Are we not the new generation of learners... if so why are we in education stagnate state. Yes we change and update curriculum.  Yes we have cutting edge grading and assessing and tech but have we really changed.  30 years ago I had a choice of 3 levels of math and english, socials and 3 sciences.  Now today I teach the next generation the same courses.. Great but the job world changed.  I am not producing the same employment force.   The jobs I started out with dont exist. Gone are the days of many restaurant workers, now we have ordering kiosks instead.  So I asked my grade 12 calculus class this question..what job will your children get as they go through school..We all thought long about this one.
